[edit] Private LOCKSS Networks
Libraries use the LOCKSS software to preserve content in two distinct types of environments: the global LOCKSS network holds material of general interest to a wide community. Private LOCKSS networks hold material for smaller communities.
The global network preserves materials that are generally available on the web, including subscription-only material. Sufficient replication is ensured because the materials preserved in the public network are those that the wider community has agreed they wish to preserve. The global network is maintained by the Stanford University-based LOCKSS staff with funding provided by the LOCKSS Alliance.
Materials of interest to a small community or that is sensitive, such as that held by government agencies, may be preserved in a Private LOCKSS Network. For institutions that do not participate in the LOCKSS Alliance, the Stanford University-based LOCKSS staff will provide Private LOCKSS Network support for a negotiated fee.
